Welcome to the Fun Fit Food Project

The Fun Fit Food Project is an initiative set up to improve the health of children and is supported by Shepway District Council working in Partnership with East Coast Kent NHS.

By educating children about healthy eating and exercise we hope to empower them to make healthier decisions in the future and begin the spread of these messages into their families in a positive way. The aim is to begin to change the general culture to provide a long term improvement in their health.

The government has set targets to reduce the body weight of children under 11 by 2010, with the aim that this will have a positive impact on the health throughout the population. If current trends continue the cost to the economy of poor health could be £3.6 billion.

People's lifestyles are very complex and there are many factors which contribute to health. To encourage healthy lifestyles in the UK means that action to educate and encourage our future generations has to start now. It has been identified in the Kent Public Health Strategy that there is a need to tackle body weight at a young age to prevent the early onset of health problems, such as cardiovascular disease, Strokes, Cancer and in particular type 2 Diabetes.

Healthy choices in diet and regular exercise will significantly decrease the risk of death in all age groups, which means that our children may be the first generations to halt the rise in death rate.

Why not take a look at the Hidden Vegetable tomato sauce. Yes there really are 5 vegetables in it!!!!! Why not try making it and use it on pitta breads and add some cheese for a really tasty, healthy pizza. Or simply mix it with some cooked pasta shapes and sprinkle over some cheese. (Remember to always have a responsible adult helping you when cooking)

Fun Fit Food Tips

Pizza-topping tactics

Enjoy a pizza today but choose a lower-fat topping such as vegetables, ham, fish or prawns, instead of pepperoni, salami or extra cheese.

What a spread!

Use a reduced-fat spread on your bread today, instead of butter.

Smashing mash

Make mashed potato with reduced-fat spread instead of butter, and 1% fat milk or skimmed milk, instead of whole or semi-skimmed milk.

Don't chicken out!

Take the skin off your chicken before you eat it tonight and reduce the saturated fat content.

Chop chop

Trim the fat off your chops or steak tonight.

Eggs eleven

Fancy eggs for breakfast? Skip the oil and butter. Poach, boil or dry-fry your eggs this morning and get the day off to a great start.

Get saucy

Tonight, try a tomato sauce on your pasta. It's lower in saturated fat than a creamy or cheesy sauce.

Get grilling

Use the grill instead of the frying pan today, whatever meat you're cooking.

What a grate idea!

Make cheese go further by grating cheese instead of slicing it. This can mean you use less.

Give potatoes a roasting

Make your roast potatoes healthier by cutting them into larger pieces than usual and using just a little sunflower or olive oil.

Unsat that fat

Today, when you're cooking, use an unsaturated oil such as sunflower, rapeseed or olive, rather than butter, lard or ghee.

Tips for chips

Choose thick, straight-cut chips instead of French fries or crinkle-cut, and if you're making your own, pop them in the oven with a drizzle of sunflower oil, rather than deep-frying.

No mistaken bacon

Craving a bacon buttie? Choose back bacon instead of streaky bacon today. And if you're cooking your own, grill the bacon instead of frying.

For better or wurst

Sausages tonight? Compare labels on the packs and choose the ones lower in saturated fat. And make sure you grill them instead of frying.

Snack attack

If you need a snack today, try picking up some fruit, toast, a low-fat yoghurt or a handful of unsalted nuts, instead of chocolate, doughnuts, croissants or pastries.

Take the hurt out of yoghurt

Today, choose a type of yoghurt lower in fat and saturated fat than the one you normally have. There can be a big difference between different products.
