Welcome

Shepway District Council's Environmental Education, is part of Environmental Health who are responsible for a wide range of statutory public health activities. This range of activities contributes to the health and safety of Shepway residents and visitors to the district.

  • Environmental Education focuses not only on the prevention of ill health, but also on the promotion of well being.
  • It is achieved by education throughout the district with in schools and community groups.
  • Projects such as Fun Fit Food,  and the Shepway Fruit and Veg Bag scheme aim to increase the consumption of fresh fruit and vegetables eaten each day with a non profit making scheme for local primary schools, nurseries and local community groups, along with a bid to increase the amount of exercise we all do.
  • Projects such as Making Smoking Uncool, take a new approach to the health matters for the young and teenage.

The Environmental Education Officers fulfil several obligations and statutory functions placed on Shepway DC by central government.

  • The “Fruit and Veg Bag” scheme provides affordable produce to a targeted audience and encourages families, particularly those on low incomes, to eat more fruit and vegetables. These schemes link well with the government’s 5-a-day campaign and will be a significant contributor towards NPI 55 ‘Prevention of obesity among primary school children in reception year’.
  • The Government have commissioned Sir Michael Marmot to review the most effective strategies to reduce health inequalities from 2010 and the Audit Commission have produced a report on Tackling Health Inequalities in Kent. This identified that 9.3 children per 100 in Shepway were obese 187th out of 386 in England. East Kent has a consistently bad record for numbers of deaths due to smoking. Shepway has the 266th worst record out of 386 local authorities with nearly twice as many deaths as the best local authority. The “Veg Bag” and “Fruit Bag” schemes, the “Fun, Fit, Food Show” and the”Smoking is Uncool” drama programme in senior schools will all contribute to reducing health inequalities.
  • The Food Standards Agency, in their Framework Agreement on Local Authority Food Law Enforcement, set out the Agency’s expectations on the planning and delivery of food law enforcement. These expectations reflect a combination of recognised good practice and existing requirements under statutory Codes of Practice. Local Authorities must include education driven elements in their food service plan. This is done at Shepway through the routine food hygiene inspection programme, food hygiene training and food based health education. The programme for 2009/10 aims to reduce the occurence of Listeria in the over 60’s.
  • At a time when public health is focusing on the “Swine flu” epidemic. Shepway Environmental Education Officers will be taking a presentation into primary schools to teach them how to wash their hands using fun techniques.
